Pros & Cons
Of being a girl named Pepper

Pepper, like salt & pepper. I say this 90% of the time I get on the phone. You know it’s bad when you have a whole spiel just for people to understand what your name is. If I don’t say my little phrase then I get to be called Heather (or the worst name: Tipper) through the whole conversation. Some days I don’t correct them.

When I do get them to get my name I still have people ask me how to spell it! Do you think they really don’t know how to spell pepper? Or do they think there could be some special way to spell pepper?

I do have to say now I love having a unique name.

As a grade schooler I hated it, but who really liked their name in grade school. I think even the ten Jenny’s in my class had to hate their name at some point. Probably when they had to go by Jenny A, Jenny B, and Jenny C and they still couldn’t figure out who the teacher was calling. In junior high my name gave me some status when everyone was into things that made them unique. And now, as an adult, everyone who I meet says, “Oh, I like that” when they hear my name. You know Jenny B doesn’t get that.

My wife and I have a 4 month old daughter and we named her Pepper. When my wife suggested the name, I wasn’t in love with it. But I saw how much my wife loved the name and it grew on me. Now I couldn’t imagine our Pepper being named anything else. Whenever people hear her name, the immidiate response is always “That is so cute!”

I have to agree. Grade school was rough and I have the same explanation every time I tell someone on the phone what my name is. Lol. Funny thing is…. I went to school w another girl named Pepper. Mine came from a tv show. Police Woman. I don’t mind it now either. :-)

Our parents had the same idea it seems, they got Pepper from Police Woman too :) I hated my name in primary school and always swore to my parents that the day i turned 18 i would change my name because of all the teasing! but after a while i guess i realized that they were the ones that should be embarrassed by their dreadfully unoriginal jokes, and now I love my name, it’s nice to be unique!

Pepper, everything you wrote about your (our) name is exactly how I felt and feel to this day. Your opening line is the same line I use over the phone. I love and appreciate the name now but in grade school it was horrid. And even funnier my middle initial is “S” and of course people think my middle name is Salt. But in middle school and high school it made me popular. It’s so good to hear I’m not alone!

Stunned to say the least! I’ve never in my entire life met or heard of anyone else named Pepper! I’m not alone! Lol! Beyond awesome!

Yep, “Sgt. Pepper Anderson” on Police Woman is how I got my name as well. Grandpa & Dad insisted on it! (could they name me “Angie” or “Angela” after Angie Dickenson that played Sgt. Pepper Anderson? No, of course not! Now I’m glad that they didn’t!)

Everything that all of the Ladies that have commented before me ring true. :-)

A lot of the time I don’t bother explaining how I got my name if someone comes off rude – I just say that my parents were hippies! (which is true! Ha!) However, if they actually seem interested then I tell them the story. (ending with how my Mom wanted to name me “Juanita Marie” instead & how even though it is a pretty name, I like Pepper much better!)

When I was a kid it was even worse because my maiden name was “May”, just like the month. So when I introduced myself as “Pepper May” they would always ask me what my last name was – thinking that “May” was “Mae”!

I’ve even been accused of lying about my name & had to prove it by showing my I.D.!

Get tons of compliments & I now love being “Pepper”!
