Rainbow Rice

Rainbow Rice is one of my great finds on Pinterest. I saw this project and I knew we were going to have to do it. I had no idea how much better the rice would look in person! Plus Zane loved doing this!

Now you have Rainbow Rice.

You can do lots of fun things with this, owe will be using it for a project for letter I (hint hint).

I also realized that this could be used for adult crafts too. It would be great for in a vase with flower (probably fake ones). Use the rice to stick your cake pops into and prop them up or hide the Styrofoam that is propping them up.

Any other ideas for uses for this fun and lovely rice?

A Craft a Day

A Craft a Day: B is for Bugs

Welcome to a Craft a Day. We are making our way through the alphabet this year so if you missed a you can find it here.

If you are new to A Craft a Day

A Craft a Day gives you five activities that you can enjoy with your kids, one for each day of the week.  Most of these activities work well for preschoolers, but you may be able to adapt them for your toddler. If you want to learn more about the basics of A Craft A Day you can find them at a Craft a Day: Coming Back Soon.

I will post the crafts on Saturdays so you can use the weekend to get any supplies that you may need.

Are you Supermom?

Now I’m not supermom and I don’t expect you to be either. We don’t always get to each activity, sometimes life is just too busy.

Hopefully you may try one or two of these activities with me and my kids! You don’t have to do every single one. You don’t have to be doing preschool with your child.

I just hope to give you a resource for some great fun with your kids!

The Crafts:

  • Letter of the week bee – After posting this link I realized I forgot to have Zane put wings on his B, oops. We didn’t paint the letter and I used craft felt for the stripes.
  • Butterfly Bounty – This is an awesome snack to have your little one help you make. Zane loved making these and Zarek loved eating them!

  • Book Worms – Or maybe centipedes? This was a little harder for Zane, but with help he did great.

  • Bug Jars – This is lots of fun for all ages, but also reminded how much I hat bugs. Zane also hates to touch bugs too. LOL
  • Rock bugs – While playing out in the garden finding bugs, pocket a few rocks that will work for bug creating. This is a great way to get through some extra craft supplies also.

Supplies: Craft Paper, Craft Felt, Pipe Cleaner, Glue, Glitter Glue or Paint, Googly Eyes, Snack Mix, Snack Bags, Clothes Pin, Yarn, Craft Stick, Permanent Marker, Jar, Rocks, Misc Craft Supplies

Be Featured

If you do any of these crafts and happen to take a picture or write a blog post about it please make sure and share your link in the comments. Also don’t forget to link the original crafter! I may feature you and your blog  on the following weeks post!

7 Elements of a Blog Blogging

How Important is Color on Your Website?

Colors are so important in your website design. Color can make all the difference. Colors can change the tone of your site, emotional effect your readers, and colors can make your site unique and stand out!

Find your colors!

When looking at color for your site you should think about creating a color palette. In design and branding you always want to try to make sure you are using only 3-5 main colors. When you start getting over 5 colors things start to become too busy. You also want to make sure that at least one or two of your colors are neutral.

Now if you want to create your own unique palette but don’t know where to start, look around you. Look at some of your favorite clothes, look through your favorite magazines, or look at some of your favorite websites. You may be surprised where you can find inspiration.

If you hire a designer to create your layout make sure to ask for the hex codes for the colors in your site.

If you do not have the colors that are used on your site you can use some different tools to find the colors. If you have a header that has all your colors or take a screen shot of your site ( fullscreen). You can visit PhotoCopa and find your color palette by uploading these images to this great tool.

Use your colors!

Use your colors in everything you possibly can. Change the colors on your google friends widget,  on your blogfrog community, and if their is an option of editing on an item you are putting on your site use it.

Make sure all your buttons match your palette. Use these colors on your twitter page, facebook page and other external social sites. As an example, when your readers go to  your twitter page if you are using the same colors they are going to instantly know this is you! This is where they want to be!

Examples

My personal favorite tool is Colour Lovers. This is a great community. You can create your own palettes or you can use pre-made palettes. If you have a color that you know you want to use, you can search for a palette with that color. Another great thing is that people can vote for color palettes, so you are able to see what palettes are popular.

Just while writing this post I found these five great color palettes:

Getting Healthy

How are you? A Challenge

Two years ago something happened in my life that would change it forever. Not for the good. My world was turned upside down. We had been fighting it for years but it finely came to an end I never expected.

I know this makes you curious on what it could have been, but the fact is that I don’t write about it online. I talk to friends, family and other sisters in Christ. Writing it online is very permanent and putting it up here could make it hurtful and dangerous.

The fact is that the result of the situation made it so that everything had to be revealed to friends and family. I made the choice that to keep going on the lies had to come out. Secrets that had been hiding for so long needed to be told to everyone. Upon the confession to friends and family I came upon a problem.

What do you say to someone who asks “How are you?” If you are like me over two years ago, you always just said “fine”. But I realized this was a lie. My friends knew this was a lie at this point in my life, I was struggling for every day.

Why do we lie to our friends?

I really started thinking about this question and realizing that I needed to take it more serious. I needed my friends to know that I was not okay. I needed their support, their love, their prayers and sometimes a hug.

I asked myself why I always automatically say “Fine”.

Was I afraid that friends would not understand? Was I trying avoid talking about what was going on? Was I trying to not waste their time?

After really thinking about these reasons I realized they were ridiculous.

If these people were my friends why would they not understand? Avoiding the subject was not going to make it go away.  If they were really my friends they would want to take the time to listen to me.

If it was the other way around I would want my friends to feel like they can tell me that they are struggling, that they are sad, that they need prayer.

The Challenge

I made a challenge to myself. Every time someone asked me “How are you?” I would stop, think, and answer honestly. I challenged myself to do it for a year. After that year was over I continued because I realized it was helpful and it was truthful. None of my friends stopped asking and they were always supportive.

So this is my challenge to you also, I dare you to answer honestly every time someone asks you how you are. Do it for a week, a month, 6 months, your choice, but try it!

Are you lying to your friends?

What do you do when someone asks you how you are? When things are lousy and life is falling apart around you do you tell them the truth?

Why do you avoid telling people what is really on your heart? Do you have some friends that you tell the truth but others you don’t? Why?

Butterfly Snacks

I found this fun activity at Family Fun and it was so much fun I had to share. This is another way to get your kids to “cook”.

We made our caterpillars first. I was actually very proud of Zane because he was the one to point out that the caterpillar turns into a butterfly.

We painted the clothes pins ($ Tree is a great place for these) with glitter glue. We used a brush to spread all over the clothes pins.

Then we added googley eyes and pipe cleaner antenna. That made us caterpillars!

We then made the snack mix in snack bags. I put different ingredient options for Zane to add to the bags. Pretty much everything got dumped in, but you could take your time with your preschooler and have them plan out their snack mix.

Zane was very proud of his Butterfly Snacks.

I thought his butterflies turned out great and we may make them again for a treat for a play date or to brighten a friends day. What’s also nice is if you use good glue to glue things down you can just reuse the caterpillar part of the butterfly over and over.

Could you see yourself doing this with your kids?
